| My blog is up! |
[Jan. 16th, 2006|10:11 pm] |
Yippee, another blog! Fuck you internet, we're doing it anyway. Me, my wife Lora, our friend Ryan, my sister and her husband are now posting at GreatMomentsInInternetHistory.com. I've had the domain name for about 2 years and this is what I'm doing with it, practically nothing - but it's funny, I think. Anyway, enjoy/ignore at your leisure.

| | Imogen Heap | ] | This is one of those nights where I'm going to keep writing the same
damn thing over and over again, but I need to get the word out.
Today we FINALLY released the long delayed Only Children 7".
Xvala and Vinyl Nerd (aka BCD) put it out. There were all sorts
of things that made this take so long, but the last problem turned into
a blessing. Someone accidentally put a bunch of our Only Children
CDs into the GUK samplers from their last tour. This left 70
copies of the record without their companion CD. As a way to make
up for the lack of a CD, I decided we should personally hand draw
covers for these copies. Approximately 10 people, including
myself, did just this. We actually did 100 covers (30 promos as
well). This is in addition to the already limited and fancy
nature of this project. Please check out the final product here. Furthermore, I scanned all 100 covers, which you can see here. The pressing info is below:
=================

Turns out with a few plugins it's actually somewhat easy. I went
through the tutorial and then started messing with the result a
bit. It's ugly, and not at all going to be made into an actual
site, but here you go. The hard part will be learning to do this without tables, but I'm determined to get there. Check out CSS Zen Garden
to see how much better you can make a site look without using
tables. This is terribly embarassing in a way, that I've been
paid to do numerous websites and am only now finally getting the time
to learn all this shit.
The plan now is to get a mock up from Micah for the new Blue Collar Press
site and get something done. Then, in my spare time (har!) come
up with a few basic layouts that we can use for clients. I think
we'll have to start requiring clients have a Dreamhost account, or an
account that supports Mambo. I just don't want to make anymore
crap, or get stuck being a webmaster, or have a client come back months
later and need a bunch of impossible shit added to the site when they
could just do it themselves.
In related news, Lindsa Lohan's tit popped out again (nsfw). Way to go America!

| BCD in Lawrence - A First Look |
[Sep. 12th, 2005|11:50 pm] |
If you weren't aware, we, the Blue Collar Press and Distro will soon be
residents of Lawrence. If all goes well, we will be up and running by
Monday the 19th. I took some photos a few nights ago, before most of
the major electrical work was completed. The (new) press is a bit
emptier right now, since all the prep work is done, but we will start
moving stuff on Friday and all through the weekend. Take a look (had to
use our Press shirt mock thing to load the pics) at the gigantic
pics: Click-it-ty-click!

| | Randy Newman - Louisiana 1927 | ] | Actual drunk post right now, but Micah has been taking wads of paper for the last several weeks and doing this whole "huh, can I make it?" thing and then he shoots a basket into the trash can. So I started doing no look attempts and I'm at about 30-40% right now, which aint' bad. The first one was when I was walking with an empty glue stick, and while still walking and not looking I threw it into the trask can. Number two was a paper wad about the size of a dime that I did while keeping eye contact with Micah the entire time. Distance was about 12 feet on that one. Numbers three and four have been a pen and pencil, no look from the side, a bit hard too since it's using my right arm and the trash is to my right. The one I can't get is the 30 foot shot, but Micah almost got it with a sidearm technique. Anybody else have any great "no look / throwing a thing into another thing" stories? |

http://www.sploid.com/news/2005/09/01/admit-it-katrinas-victims-are-black-123542.php
If you have eyes you've realized this already, but only
if you have eyes, because no one else is speaking the truth. The
"reporters" aren't doing their job and telling the audience that New
Orleans has abondoned it's black community, in 2005 no less. We
had a meeting today at Cutter's and watched CNN replay the same footage
over and over again of nothing but poor black people, stranded and
dying, in New Orleans. A lot of people, even on message boards we host,
have zero sympathy for folks that "made the decision to stay
there". What decision? You're a poor family, you've
probably been laid off from your good job years ago, you have no money
to secure lodging elsewhere, even if you have a car you can't afford
the gas to get far enough out of town, and to top it all off you
probably had to send a kid or two to die in Iraq so they could afford a
college education. More than anything, it's that this fucking
country has been shitting on it's poor for the past 20 years, more and
more, laying them off, restricting their civil rights, sending them to
war, preventing them from voting, and now this. Please
understand, if you are poor this is what your local and national
government thinks of you. They don't care. They don't want
to hear from you. They don't want you to ask difficult
questions. I find that the only place to get actual journalism
anymore is places like BoingBoing, Slashdot, Sploid, and MetaFilter. A perfect example of this is the "loot / find" observation, first noted here, then further analyzed at DailyKOS.
Anyway, a bit of a tirade, but it angers me to no end what's happening
to our poor and middle class. Oh, and Wal-Mart, they donated 15
million dollars for relief. This is a company that just had a quarterly net profit of 2.65 BILLION.
If you don't understand what net profit is, it means that after paying
for everything: advertising, employees, products, etc., Wal-Mart still
put 2.65 billion dollars into the bank. They could donate the
entire 2.65 billion and still have a net profit for the entire
year. Why don't they? That's another good question.

| More Web Related Shit |
[Aug. 31st, 2005|10:38 pm] |
| [ | Current Music |
| | Marjorie Fair - Waves | ] | Advanced warning, this is boring...
Dreamhost, our most wonderful
webhost, had a message about another new "one-click-install" addition.
Basically, they love the open source. Anywho, the new addition is Mambo.
Not being familiar, I Googled Mambo and found out it's an open source
content managment system. I installed in on one of my personal sites, Great Moments in Internet History, and it seems pretty deep. I just used their default template, but it seems to have a very easy to work with back end.
As I've said previously, I am pretty much over designing sites the way
I used to. We need to throw together sites for Vinyl Nerd, the
iSlip, a redesigned Blue Collar Press site, and the big BCD
redesign whenever that happens. This would be especially cool for
the BCD redesign, since the goal for version 5 is to finally separate
the store and the content and let them live peacefully apart. For
over a year now I've been plotting out how we can make the content of
the Distro site actually worth while for people. The merch part
is fine, everybody understands how to get shirts, but we've got a lot
of talented people here. I'd like to start including articles,
photo galleries, blogs - essentially anything that interests us.
The key to all of that, however, is that it has to be easy to
update. Right now, to update the sites either Micah or I have to
go fuck with Dreamweaver or Blogger, so when inspiration strikes it's
usually too much of a hassle.
It could be hugely important for the Press site as well. The BCP
site seems to get nowhere with Google, after all these years, and it's
because there's nothing going on with the Meta and Flash, Micah and I
have both made Flash based Press sites, they look nice, but eat balls
in getting us hits.
Did anyone actually read this?

All I had to do today was finish the Ad Astra Per Aspera website but that ain't happening since the Dreamhost MySQL server crashed again (that's our webhost, I can't update anything right now). This is the second time in 3 days this site has prevented me from seeing Batman: The Young Years. Lora and Evie get back tomorrow which I'm beyond stoked about. I loves me my family. Overall everything rocks at work and at home. I've been super happy with how awesome Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer is and how great they are to work with. Oh, and Teeter Sperber is my hero. If you want to read an awesome eWar be sure to read her blog. My spider bite is pretty much on the mend at this point (happened two weeks ago). No hole in my leg or anything, although it's gonna leave a mark as they say. What a great way to spend $1,000.00. I remember thinking, man, what am I going to do with all this money? How can I waste a grand? Maybe a surround sound system? New computer? How about an emergency room trip, those are fun! Anywho, what is this like 3 posts in a row? |

| [ | Current Music |
| | Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer | ] | Amen: http://www.43folders.com/2004/12/five_mistakes_b.html
The above article pretty much points out everything that's wrong with band web sites. I've made a few band sites in my day and I've had to make some of them essentially useless (including some of those). Everybody wants a Flash site because they think people are going to visit it every day to look at the pretty intro but it doesn't work that way. It seems the Flash intro is supposed to be the content, as opposed to news updates and journal entries.
To this day my personal favorite project was the Hey Mercedes website. It's thankfully still in use today. When I was contacted to do the site it was immediately obvious that the band understood the internet. One of the first things Bob Nanna mentioned to me was how important it was to keep the band's Blog intact. A minimal amount of Flash was used, tasteful Flash so to speak, for decoration.
Another thing that drives me crazy (even though we're guilty of it as well) is when Flash, frames, or iframes prevent the user from bookmarking individual pages. It's pained me to have to do this with BCD, but we're in a transitional period right now and needed a way to "brand" the webstores without abandoning our cart software, so frames it is for now. If someone finds something interesting on your site you want them to be able to link back to it. People do this all the time on their blogs and journals. It's free advertising, and more than that it allows people to have "Oh my God! Check this out" reactions to specific parts of your website. It's kind of a moot point for band sites, since there's rarely anything interesting to bookmark anyway.
Something not mentioned in that article is how important it is to utilize online communities like MySpace, Pure Volume, Blogger, Flickr, etc. A staple of the band site is the photo page. When Micah was working on the Koufax site we made a decision to not create a photo page. Instead we set up a Flickr account for the band, and began tagging "Koufax" photos. It's worked great so far, and as a bonus the photos are added to a database that is accessed by millions of people. Furthermore, if the band is too busy to add photos then the fans themselves can begin adding to the database. The same thing applies with MySpace, Blogger, etc: Go where the people are.
Okay, sorry if this was boring or weird, but I actually do put a lot of thought into the little web design I still do and I found this interesting. I've never really written down my thoughts on the subject, so thanks for reading. |

The first significant upgrade to BCD in years is now up and running: Right Here!!
This took me almost a full month, between laying it out, testing it, and writing new code. There is actually a long way to go, but I'm thrilled to finally be this far along. There is going to be more to come, including some hosted blogs. Let me know what you guys think. Oh, we also launched our first proper custom band store, for, of course, The Get Up Kids. You can find it here.

http://www.michaelkelly.fsnet.co.uk/karl.htm Stories about Roy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm. An excerpt from story #1:
It always starts the same way. I am in the garden airing my terrapin Jetta when he walks past my gate, that mysterious man in black.
'Hello Roy,' I say. 'What are you doing in Dusseldorf?'
'Attending to certain matters,' he replies.
'Ah,' I say.
He apprises Jetta's lines with a keen eye. 'That is a well-groomed terrapin,' he says.
'Her name is Jetta.' I say. 'Perhaps you would like to come inside?'
'Very well.' He says.
Roy Orbison walks inside my house and sits down on my couch. We talk urbanely of various issues of the day. Presently I say, 'Perhaps you would like to see my cling-film?'
This had me actually crying, and of course could have only been found by The Thighmaster. |

[Mar. 7th, 2005|09:42 pm] |
Before working at BCD I spent 6 1/2 years working for Barnes & Noble. I had a lot of fun, and met a lot of really awesome, quirky people, one of whom passed away tonight. Our friend Zoe was part of the Wichita theatre scene, along with her husband J.R., for about 20 years. She was wickedly funny, and really really loved Mystery Science Theater 3000. Zoe and I were always really good at complaining about stuff together, but it never got annoying, and that is truly rare. Usually you come to a few points that you want each other to just shut up, but it was really always quite fun. Probably the coolest moment we had together was when this (for real) 400 pound guy with a beard wandered up to me and asked where we kept the nudist magazines. Zoe turned around and had her eyes closed because she was laughing already and I still had to answer him. It was a nice moment. Miss you.

| I Think Capcom Did This One. |
[Mar. 2nd, 2005|12:21 am] |
I'm pretty sure that if Flash didn't exist and video game systems never progressed past the Super Nintendo we'd all be playing this after school. The object of the game is to "Masturbate as much as possible in 3 minutes!". The game, unfortunately, is a poor masturbation simulator. Clicking your right mouse button shoots errant cum wads that are impossible to aim. Believe me, I was aiming for pussies all the way but I kept hitting the pool table, the bar, the clock, and most of the time right into the mouth of a cum guzzling whore.
The graphics leave a lot to be desired as well. I wasn't expecting anything mindblowing, but I also wasn't expecting girls with hip sockets that rotate 360 degrees. The girl at the window wasn't even color corrected! Shame shame, designers. I was disappointed with the dong as well. A lot more attention should have been paid to what is essentially the star of the game. The penis is extremely veiny, for one, like "Lewis and Clark explore the west via river" veiny. The game also lacks an option to choose an uncircumcised penis. This oversight alone will make the game unplayable for most of Great Britain. Also, several of the girls look like Kirsten Dunst.
I give it four asterisks out of one million. ****
